Trasse origine da un villaggio di Val di Magra nominato Albiano, e da un Ser Giovan Paolo di Cristoforo nel 1432 fu trapiantata in Pietrasanta dove fu fatto Cancelliere degli Anziani e Camerlingo municipale nel 1453. I suoi successori appartennero al Collegio degli Anziani, ed un Bartolomeo di Lorenzo sedeva Priore degli Anziani nel 1505. Gli Albiani ebbero gran parte nella famosa congiura che nello stesso anno si ordiva per sottrarre Pietrasanta alla Repubblica di Lucca in favore dei Fiorentini, per il qual fatto parecchi degli Albiani ebbero a soffrire l'esilio e la confisca de' beni. Ultimo di questa famiglia fu Tommaso Albiani che nel 1573 instituì suoi eredi i Tomei coll'obbligo di assumerne il nome e lo stemma.
