Antica famiglia, di chiara e provata nobiltà, originaria di Ferrara, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome, legato, a sua volta, alla funzione di tamburino, nell'esercito o come banditore cittadino, occupato, probabilmente, da un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, ad Angelo, nato a Ferrara l'11 luglio del 1784, da Giuseppe di Nicola Tamburi e da Maria Caterina Poltrini, cavaliere aurato e dell'Ordine di S. Gregorio Magno, con atto 15 marzo 1840 venne concessa la nobiltà ereditaria di S. Arcangelo; egli sposò Geltrude Prosperi Buzzi e morì in Ferrara nel 1850, lasciando tre figli, fra i quali l'avv. cav. Augusto, nato il 31 maggio 1830, sposato con Rita Squarzoni. Morì il 16 aprile 1891, lasciando due figli che oggi rappresentano la famiglia. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano col titolo di nobile
