Originaria della Germania, fu portata in Italia nel 1155 da un Olrico, il quale vi avea accompagnato l'Imperatore Federico I, e fissò sua dimora in Chieri. Nel 1400 Federico si ammogliò con una dei Vignola signori di Santena, la quale portò questo feudo nella casa Tana, di cui Tomeno per il primo ottenne l'investitura nel 1449. I due figli di questo, Domenico e Nicolino, divisero in due rami la propria famiglia. Il primo fu capo dei Tana conti di Santena, i quali si estinsero nel 1791 colla maorte del poeta Agostino; il secondo fu capostipite dei Tana che nel 1571 comprarono il castello di Santenotto e nel 1600 conseguirono, con titolo marchionale, i feudi di Entracque, Verolengo, Limone, Lucento e Castelvecchio, e si estinsro nel 1734 nella persona del Marchese Carlo-Camillo morto celibe.
