In antico era divisa in due rami detti l'uno del Lion d'oro e l'altro del Lion bianco. Giuseppe fu archivista dell'archivio mediceo, e di lui si conserva in famiglia una relazione scritta di suo pugno, del viaggio che egli fece da Firenze a Madrid nel 1807, quando, diciannovenne, fu eletto con altri undici compagni a scortare, come guardia reale a cavallo, le carozze, i carriaggi e tutto il seguito della Regina d'Etruria. In quell'occasione fu testimone della rivoluzione avvenuta in Aranjuez contro il Principe della Pace, di cui narra tutti i particolari. Il Cav. Leopoldo Tanfani, figlio del precedente, e direttore del R. Archivio di Stato di Pisa, essendo stato adottato dall'illustre Prof. Silvestro Centofanti, dopo la morte di questo, avvenuta il 6 Gen. 1880, al suo cognome e allo stemma di sua famiglia aggiunse il cognome e l'arma del suo adottante.

Inquartato; nel primo e quarto partito d'oro e d'azzurro, a due clave nodose dell'uno nell'altro in palo, quelle di sinistra rovesciate; nel secondo e terzo spaccato; nel primo d'oro, all'aquila di nero, coronata del campo; nel secondo d'argento, ad un cuore umano al naturale. Cimiero: Un destrocherio armato d'argento, impugnante colla mano di carnagione una banderuola di rosso, caricata da due gigli d'argento, svolazzante a sinistra.
