Il Villabianca riferisce che tal casato, detto Lanza o Lancea, trae origine da un Ernesto, duca di Baviera, valoroso condottiero che, verso l'anno 970, fu soprannominato "il capitano della grande lancia", da cui il cognome. Egli ebbe due figli, Enrico e Corrado, i quali, insediandosi in Lombardia e nel Regno di Napoli, acquisirono molti feudi e signorie. In Sicilia, la famiglia, fu illustrata da un Bonifacio, signore d'Anglona, il quale ebbe quattro figli: Galeotto, da cui discendono i conti di S. Severino, Bianca, moglie di Federico II imperatore, Corrado dei conti di Caltanissetta, e Manfredi, barone di Sinagra. Risultano, inoltre, degni di speciale menzione: un Pietro conte di Cerami e barone di Naro; un Galvano primo conte di Fondi 1220; un Carlo stratigoto di Messina 1236; un Federico viceré di Sicilia 1258; un Galvano 2° decapitato in Napoli qual partigiano di rè Corradino suo parente; un Corrado signore di Castel
