Los primeros recuerdos de esta noble familia se remontan a 1180, cuando formaba parte de la noble sociedad del Albergo, que administraba la pequeña república de Savigliano, en el pueblo de Oddino, Oggerino, Giovanni, Nicolino y Amelio Tapparelli. En 1240, William y Odo estaban a la cabeza de la facción de Guelph.
