Famiglia proveniente da Ferrara, dove alla Corte Estense i suoi componenti di padre in figlio per lunga serie d'anni, coprirono la carica di cavallerizzo maggiore ed ebbero altri onorevoli impieghi. Dalla Camera Ducale Estense ebbero in feudo terre in Consandolo, Medelena e Nuova. Numerosi documenti attestano che appartenevano alla nobiltà ferrarese. Allorchè nel 1598, il duca Cesare fu costretto a cedere Ferrara alla Chiesa, seguirono il loro principe a Modena, continuando nello stesso impiego. Fin dal 1535, in persona di Giovanni Battista, avevano avuto dal duca Ercole II l'investitura di alcune possessioni in Novi di Carpi, investitura riconfermata poi alla famiglia nel 1598 dal duca Cesare e nel 1629 dal duca Francesco I. Godevano della cittadinanza nobile di Carpi (dove poi ebbero stabile dimora) fin dal 1571, nella quale, il 16 nov., ad intercessione di Guido Coccapani. fattor ducale, i Provvisori di quella città l'avevano concessa al loro avo, Matteo,
