Ancienne famille vénitienne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, qui s'est propagée au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Selon certains auteurs, cette famille descendrait de la famille noble française Cible du Poitou ; cependant, en l'absence de certaines preuves historiques pour étayer cette hypothèse, la thèse qui voit l'agrégation de la famille Targhetta au patriciat vénitien à partir des mérites acquis par la même dans la guerre de Candie et suite à la donation habituelle de cent mille ducats est plus acceptable.
