Tal famiglia, di chiara ed antica virtù, risulta originaria di Rivarolo Canavese, risalendo, nelle memorie locali, alla fine del secolo XVI con Cristoforo, già morto nel 1645. Suo figlio, Bartolomeo, che testava il 6 gennaio 1677, era maresciallo d'alloggio nelle guardie del Principe Tommaso. Omonimo suo e nipote di figlio, Bartolomeo Tarina, morto il 23 ottobre 1749, fu chirurgo maggiore del reggimento di Saluzzo. Singolare il fatto che prima di partire per la spedizione di Sicilia, ove Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia andava a cingere corona di Re egli testò (14 agosto 1713). Uno dei suoi figli, Maurizio (n. 28 giugno 1745, dec. 3 agosto 1821) fu avvocato vice uditore di guerra e capitano di milizie (3 febbraio 1793).
