Di origine normanna, prese nome dalla terra di Tarsia di cui era signora in Calabria, ed à goduto nobiltà in Monopoli, Conversano e Cosenza, ed à posseduto i feudi di Belmonte, Bonifati, Busignano, Canina, Casalnuovo, Castiglione, Corigliano, Crucoli, Falconara, Fuscaldo, Latruca, Nucara, Riccaro, Santabarbara, Santangelo e Terranova, e le conteee di Rossano, Sancineto e Tarsia. Fra i molti illustri personaggi di questa famiglia son da notare un Roberto Tarsia castellano di Barletta per l'Imperatore Federico II; un Giacomo priore di Messina e di Barletta dell'Ordine Gerosolimitano e generale della Repubblica Veneta contro i Pisani; un Galeazzo consigliere di Re Federico d'Aragona, suo ambasciatore al Re di Francia reggente della vicaria, luogotenente del gran giustiziere dal regno e capitano a guerra di Cosenza; un Francesco giustiziere degli Abruzzi, reggente della gran corte della vicaria, e condottiero di mille fanti per l'Imperatore Carlo V; ed un Fiordaliso giustiziere di Calabria e prefetto
