De origem normanda, recebeu o nome da terra de Tarsia, da qual era uma dama na Calábria, e gozava de nobreza em Monopoli, Conversano e Cosenza, e possuía os feudos de Belmonte, Bonifati, Busignano, Canina, Casalnuovo, Castiglione, Corigliano, Crucoli, Falconara, Fuscaldo, Latruca, Nucara, Riccaro, Santabarbara, Santangelo e Terranova e os condados de Rossano, Sancineto e Tarsia. Entre os muitos personagens ilustres dessa família, destaca-se um castelão Roberto Tarsia de Barletta para o imperador Frederico II; um Giacomo prior de Messina e Barletta da Ordem Gerosolimitano e general da República Veneziana contra os pisanos; conselheiro de Galeazzo ao rei Frederico de Aragão, seu embaixador no rei da França regente do vicariato, tenente do grande carrasco do reino e capitão de guerra de Cosenza; um carrasco de Francesco do Abruzzi, regente da grande corte do vigário e líder de mil soldados a pé do imperador Carlos V; e um carrasco de centáurea
