Illustre ed antica famiglia patrizia milanese della quale le prime memorie risalgono agli inizi del XII secolo con un Arderico, che il 24 aprile 1104 dà investitura al monastero di San Vito nel Lodigiano (Giulini: Tomo IV - Pergamene nell'Archivio Ambrosiano). Un Ambrogio viveva nel 11850 e risiedeva in Borgo Porta Vercellina, ove e in seguito continuarono a risiedere i suoi discendenti: Ambrogio, figlio del predetto, donava lacune terre alla Basilica di S. Ambrogio (Pergamene del 1176, Archivio Ambrosiano); un Gaspare è rammentato per essersi distinto nelle guerre contro Federico Barbarossa. Buonamico fu sepolto nella Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio ove ancora vedesi il ritratto in affresco. La genealogia documentata risale ad un Giovanni, padre di Ruggero, ma altre diramazioni esistettero e che non si possono strettamente attaccate a quella del ramo vivente. A queste diramazioni appartennero un Rolando, vescovo di Spoleto, cardinale e fondatore del monastero dei Certosini di Parma; Ermes,
