Alcune delle più antiche e cospicue famiglie pistoiesi come i Taviani, i Rossi, i Ricciardi, hanno lo stemma palato, per concessione di Ugo d'Arles marchese di Toscana, il gran Barone; il quale circa al 1000 dimorando spesso in Pistoia, ove poi venne a morte, concesse a varie delle principali famiglie pistojesi, come già ad altre fiorentine, che si togliessero la sua stessa insegna, la bella insegna, che era di rosso a tre pali d'argento: "Ciascun che della bella insegna porta del gran Barone, il cui nome e il cui pregio la festa di Tommaso riconforta, da esso ebbe milizia e privilegio". (Paradiso C. XVI). Note Secondo il Casotti (cfr.) la famiglia è originaria di Pistoia e ottenne la cittadinanza pratese nel 1313. Si trovano anche i cognomi divisi e il cognome «Ughi», tutti agnatizi. La 2° variante pistoiese (ove forse la palla è uno scudetto rotondo di Francia) reca appunto il cognome Ughi. Il cavaliere Ugo Taviani, pistoiese, ottenne la cittadinanza fiorentina nel 1653. Cesare Franchini Taviani fu ammesso al patriziato pistoiese nel 1755.
