Antica ed illustre famiglia siciliana, la quale vanta come capostipite un Ruggero Scandolf, cavaliere teutonico, il quale, nel 1354, si vuole che abbia ottenuto concessione della terra di Gagliano. Dalla patria del capostipite, i suoi discendenti presero il cognome e godettero nobiltà in Catania, in Messina, etc.; possedendo un gran numero di feudi tra i quali notiamo: Arbiato, Santissima Annunziata, Buxalca, Bruca e Crisciunà, Castel d’Osimo, Fiumefreddo, Ramione, Toscano e Mandrile, Villallegra e San Todaro, Villarmosa e molti altri. Un Rinaldo, da Catania, nel 1397 ebbe la capitania di Motta Sant'Anastasia e fu sub cavallerizzo regio; un Enrico fu senatore di Catania negli anni 1415-16, 1418-19, 1421-22, 1425-26, 1427-28 e capitano di giustizia nell'anno 1430-31; un Nicolò, dell'ordine di San Benedetto, fu arcivescovo di Palermo nel 1434 e cardinale di Santa Romana Chiesa, nel 1440; altro Nicolò fu giurato di Caltagirone, negli anni 1460-61, 1462-63; un Giacomo fu senatore di
