Antichissima famiglia di Venezia, maggior personaggio storico fu senza dubbio Marcello Tegalliano secondo doge di Venezia. Quasi nulla si sa su questo secondo ipotetico doge eletto alla morte di Paoluccio nel 717. Dovrebbe essere comunque lo stesso Magister militum che firmò insieme a Paoluccio il trattato con Liutprando; Andrea Dondolo nella sua Chronica lo definisce uomo abbastanza utile. Il cognome Tegalliano gli viene assegnato in seguito, attribuendogli anche l'appartenenza alle famiglie dei Fonicalli e dei Marcello. Morì ad Eraclea nel 726. Che chi ha sostenuto che Marcello non fu mai doge, accomunando la sua persona a quella fantomatica di Paoluccio Anafesto primo doge di Venezia ; sarebbero due dogi da relegare nel mondo delle favole. Le deformazioni della propaganda veneziana e la povertà dei dati non escudono però che, proprio verso l'inizio del secolo VIII, come ha osservato Gherardo Ortalli, < cominciasse ad usarsi in area lagunare il titolo di
