A Tortona nella prima metà del XVI sec. "la famiglia de L. faceva parte del casato Costantino". Così scrive il canonico Vincenzo L. a pag. 216 cui prestando fede alle affermazioni - privi di una qualsiasi altra fonte di riferimento - di si insigne figura, inseriamo di buon grado, e con particolare intimo compiacimento la sua famiglia tra le insignite del decurione tortonese. De L. quindi e non Legè, secondo quanto riferito sopra, il chè lascia presumere un'arbitraria accentuazione di questo antroponimo che in origine doveva essere un predicato assunto per distinguere membri di una stessa famiglia che esercitavano arti di causidico, giudice, notaio, giurista. Non essendosi ancora diffuso l'uso dei cognomi è ovvio e naturale ch'essi fossero chiamati ad sempio: il Teblado di legge, il Lantelmo di legge, l'Otto di legge e con tempo quel "di legge" diventare poi congome... e senza particella: Legge.
