E' tradizione che discenda dalla nobile fam. dei Taveggi di Milano, ma è una leggenda che non crediamo abbia altro fondamento all'infuori di quello dell'assonanza dei due cognomi. Dei Teggi era detta talora nel sec. XVI, ma più anticamente, nei secoli XIII e XIV de Teca, forma dialettale latinamente tradotta in a Tegete. Comunque la famiglia è molto antica, sibbene di condizioni modeste: Pietro de Teca nel 1306 era banditore del Comune di Modena, e Albertino, di Gosbertino Teca, mercante. Quest'ultimo, che è ritenuto capostipite della famiglia, possedeva beni in Sassuolo dove forse aveva sua bituale dimora, ma era anche cittadino modenese ascritto alla cinquantina di San Paolo, nel quartiere di porta Baggiovara. L'anno 1306 Albertino, a nome dei mercanti modenesi, propone al Consiglio del Popolo di Modena di assumere la manutenzione e lo sgombro dalle nevi e la sicurezza della via che conduceva a San Pellegrino infestata dai ladroni;
