Antica famiglia calabrese, feudataria dai tempi svevi, e che ebbe fra i suoi più illustri rappresentanti il celebre filosofo cosentino Bernardino (n. 1508, deced. 1588). Questi fu, come è noto, uno dei più accaniti oppositori del sistema aristotelico. Fondò a Napoli l'Accademia Cosentina. Antonio, consigliere della regina Giovanna. Tomaso, arcivescovo di Cosenza. Vincenzo, filantropo, fondò un orfanotrofio nell'abolito monastero dei Teresiani. Fu decorata dei titoli di principe di Bonifati e marchese di S.Agata. Il ramo primogenito dei principi di Bonifati si estinse nel 1698 in Giovan Giacomo, padre di Giulia, sposata a Saverio Sambiase Sanseverino, duca di Malvito. Fu ricevuta più volte nell'Ordine di Malta dal 1588 ed aggregata da antico tempo al patriziato della città di Cosenza.
