Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Sassari, le cui notizie certe risalgono al secolo XIV. Sin da allora, infatti, i suoi membri erano annoverati tra i più potenti mercanti dell'oligarchia sassarese e, ben presto, si legarono al potente casato degli Aragonesi. Nel secolo XV alcuni di loro presero parte alle guerre nel napoletano e a quelle contro i Doria ottenendo ripetutamente il riconoscimento della generosità: nel 1428 con un Giovanni, nel 1436 con un Francesco, nel 1441 con un Antonio. Francesco, nella liquidazione dei feudi appartenuti ai Doria, nel 1436 acquistò la signoria di Pozzomaggiore. Suo figlio Pietro, però, dovette venderla ai De Ferraria; nel 1480 un altro Pietro figlio del precedente la riacquistò. Nello stesso anno egli acquistò anche la signoria del salto di Planu e Murtas. Ma, per amor di verità e completezza, non possiamo tacere che, tracce di cotal cognominizzazione, le rinveniamo già nel 1388, dal momento
