Era del Consiglio prima del 1180, ed in quell'anno Paolo Telsi fu uno degli elettori del Doge Orio Maestro Piero. Lorenzo Telsi aveva sui cinquant'anni e una discreta carriera politico-militare, più volte Savio, era stato ambasciatore presso l'imperatore Calo IV, podestà di Treviso, capitano in Dalmazia e Istria. Non apparteneva a una famiglia di prestigio, ma si era arricchito dandosi alla mercatura insieme a Giorgio Corner, che amava come un fratello. Il padre, Marco, ottenne un posto di riguardo solo dopo l'assunzione al dogado di Lorenzo; divenne Procuratore e una leggenda riferisce che non voleva portar rispetto alla maggiore autorità del figlio e che, per non far la mossa di salutarlo togliendosi il cappello, andava in giro a testa nuda.
