Le sue prime memorie rimontano all'XI secolo, e nel 1184 era noverata tra le principali che frequentavano la curia. Tre dei Tencarari combatterono per la conquista di Terrasanta. Bartolomeo fu dei Templari al tempo della persecuzione patita da questi per opera di Filippo il Bello Re di Francia. Zenone Tencarari fu Vescovo di Avignone e legato apostolico, e come tale presiedette al Concilio generale d'Alby, nel 1254, radunato per condannare gli eretici Albigesi; Nicolò, giudice, fu uno degli eletti nel 1272 per dichiarare una formola dello statuto bolognese posta in dubbio. I Tencarari dal 1258 al 1369 fecero parte dell'anzianato, ed ebbero missioni ed incarichi rilevantissimi. Ultimo di questa famiglia fu un prete che vivea nel 1500. Lo stemma della famiglia Tencarari è: Di rosso, a due tinche (pesci) d'argento, poste in palo, accompagnate in punta da una stella d'azzurro, col capo d'Angiò.
