Famiglia di nobile di Tempio originaria di Bonifacio, le cui notizie risalgono al secolo XVII, propagatasi nei secoli successivi in diverse regioni d'Italia. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome dovute alle solite cause della pronuncia dialettale e della fonetica storica, Serafino nel centro italia, Serafini in Lombardia, Serafin in Veneto. I Terafino si stabilirono in Sardegna nella seconda metà del secolo decimosettimo; nel 1698 ottennero il cavalierato ereditario e la nobiltà con un Giovanni Battista, che fu ammesso allo stamento militare nello stesso anno, durante il Parlamento Montellano. I suoi figli furono coinvolti nelle lotte galluresi durante le guerre di successione; legati ai Pes. nella prima metà del secolo XVIII, furono amministratori della baronia di Quartu, dove un ramo della famiglia si trasferì e visse fino alla fine del secolo XIX. Il ramo tempiese perse i diplomi nobiliari in un incendio e nel 1757
