Famiglia nobile ed assai antica, originaria di Piacenza (Saliceto). Con decreto della duchessa Maria Luigia, in data 3 dicembre 1830, Gaetano Testato fu creato barone, assieme ai suoi discendenti maschi. Egli era assuntore generale della ferma mista del ducato (1829), caro al Werklein, che era successo al moto Neiperg nella carica di segretario di Stato. A lui fu dovuto l'innalzamento della famiglia, la quale pare fosse discesa a modeste condizioni da un antico alto grado di civiltà e nobiltà. Infatti nel decreto suddetto si afferma che la famiglia era di antica e nobile origine, che un Pietro Angelo Testato, nel 1648, ottenne con solenne diploma la cittadinanza piacentina, che possedeva case e terreni nel Piacentino e nello Stato Pallavicino; che un Francesco Testato era prefetto nella Milizia Veneta, e che Gaetano Testato, stesso, aveva in moglie una contessa Guarneri, e aveva unito nello stemma gentilizio quello degli scotti, dei Piombini,
