Tra le più illustri e celebrate famiglie della Contea di Nizza, originaria da Lantosca, passata poi a risiedere in Piemonte, che tanto ha contribuito al governo del Regno di Sardegna e alla formazione del Regno d'Italia. La leggenda vuole però essa abbia avuto culla in Normandia, precisamente dall'omonima città. Si narra che da lì si portò prima in Inghilterra e quindi in Scozia. Il ritorno in Francia vuolsi sia avvenuto al seguito della sovrana Maria Stuarda. Un paggio di questa, infatti, rimasto in Francia quando la vedova di Francesco II fece ritorno in Scozia, si identifica con il capostipite dei Thaon. Le origini storiche fan capo a Filippo Thaon, capitano delle milizie di Lantosca nel nizzardo, il quale ottenne lettere di nobiltà da Carlo Emanuele I il 16 gennaio 1617.
