Cette ancienne maison que plusieurs sources bibliographiques disent être d'origine noble, a fourni une foule de personnages illustres dans la carrière des armes. Nombreuses pièces ont servi à dresser l'histoire de cette famille et on a dû forcément beaucoup les resteindre et abréger. On rencontre cette noblesse dans la mouvance de la baronnie de Mercœur en 1302. Elle fut inscrite a l'Armorial de 1450 et maintenue en 1666. Un chanoine de Saint-Agrève du Puy (1375); un chanoine-comte de Brioude (1604). Jacques, secrétaire du duc de Montpensier, est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages publiés de 1610 à 1638. A ce nom, on attribue un signe distinctif de noblesse représenté par le blason que l'on reproduit ci-dessous et qui confirme aussi à travers ses emblêmes, au point de vue historique et héraldique, l'assurance d'une valeur remarquable. Il est fort difficile, pour ne pas dire impossible, de réunir en faisceau toutes les tiges éparses
