E' una delle più antiche, se non la più antica famiglia nobile del Trentino. Ad essa si vuole abbia appartenuto un Albertino de Tono, ricordato nel 1050; ma notizie precise si hanno cent'anni dopo un Bertoldo, testimonio, nell'ottobre 1145, alla consacrazione della chiesa di San Michele. Nella "carta dei colonnelli" del 18 luglio 1190 illi de Thun sono messi a capo delle famiglie che dovevano guidare il contingente militare della Valle di Non per accompagnare a Roma Enrico VI, insieme con gli Ivano, i Flavon e gli Spor. E' certo che essi avevano vari feudi dalle famiglie dei conti di Flavon e di Appiano delle quali erano vassalli; e nel 1199 ricevettero in feudi il dosso di Visione, per costruirvi un castello (che venduto nel 1286 a Mainardo II, conte del Tirolo, rimase però sempre feudo di famiglia). I Thun favorirono sempre la politica di Mainardo, e per questo riuscirono
