Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, delle cui origini non si hanno notizie certe. E' comune opinione tra gli storici che questa cognominizzazione sia di origine fiorentina ed anteriore al secolo decimoterzo, nel secolo decimoquinto è tra le cospicue di Vicenza, un ramo della quale, nel secolo decimosesto, abitò nel territorio di Verona. Le famiglie forestiere, le quali dopo il 1420 vennero ad abitare in Verona, e che, avendo possedimenti in città o nel territorio, facendosi iscrivere nel campione dell'estimo, quantunque molte tra loro fossero d'origine illustre, pure salvo qualche caso non venivano aggregate al Nobile Consiglio se non dopo un mezzo secolo ed altre dopo cent'anni, e fin duecento, ed anche più. Nel corso dei secoli vari membri di questa illustre casata si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia, prevalentemente nel nord, e vi furono accolti nelle importanti cariche della città dove ebbero dimora, ma l'antichità della presente famiglia
