La famiglia è oriunda reggiana. Si ha notizie di un Domenico, n. nel 1650, che sposò Elisabetta Franceschi. Suo figlio Paolo, aiutante della Cittadella di Reggio nel 1736, sposò Germana Cassoli, e ne nacque, tra altri figli, Luigi Maria nel 1753, che continuò la famiglia. Sposò Vincenza del conte Alessandro Ancini, appartenente ad una delle più cospicue ed antiche famiglie della nobiltà reggiana. Fu uomo assai distinto ed oculato amministratore, ed ebbe importanti cariche nella città natale. Per la fiducia in lui risposta dal Governatore di Reggio, conte Antonio Re, fu nominato presidente del Manicomio di S. Lazzaro, poi Consigliere della Munucipalità di Reggio, indi dal Duca di Modena, Francesco IV, Conservatore Comunicativo, fungendo anche da vicepodestà.
