Pare che il primo di questa famiglia venuto in Sicilia sia un Andrea che, per il suo matrimonio con Nucifora, vedova di Rinaldello de Grifis, fu primo barone di Giarretta o barca del fiume del feudo Paternò, possedimento che perdette per essersi ribellato ai Martini. Fu illustrata da un Vincenzo, che fu giudice del tribunale della Gran Corte del Regno, nel 1661, nel 1668 maestro razionale giurisperito del Tribunale del Real Patrimonio, presidente del tribunale del Concistoro nel 1682 e che, con privilegio dato a 4 settembre, esecutoriato a 26 novembre 1685, ottenne per se e suoi, il titolo di duca di S. Gregorio del Borgo. Ottavio, figlio del precedente, fu dottore in leggi, giudice della Regia Udienza di Messina, nel 1699, venne iscritto nella mastra nobile di Catania il 16 gennaio 1696, tra i dottori nobili ed ebbe investitura del titolo di duca di S. Gregorio a 29 febbraio
