Cette famille est connue du Vicomte de Montravel de 1466 à 1600. Elle s'est fondue, d'après notre savant généalogiste, dans les Montaigne du Bordelais. Un Guillaume, écuyer, était seigneur du fief de Brénieu où il habitait en la paroisse de Saint-Romain d'Ay, lequel épousa. par contrat du 15 octobre 1497, demoiselle Louise du Rochain, fille de noble Raymond seigneur de Ruissac. Et testa le 18 février 1533; fit héritier son fils: 1° Sibaud et nomma ses autres enfants qui furent: 2° Antoine , capitaine pour le roi de la ville d'Auray en Bretagne, déja mort lors dudit testament. 3° André de Brenieu qui depuis épousa une demoiselle de Morvillant mais n'en eut pas d'enfant. 4° Gaspard qui furt prêtre. 5° Jeanne; 6° Isabelle; 7° François. Nous trouvons que le 25 septembre 1712 noble Guy de Tivoley, seigneur de Chabestan, résidant au lieu de Moras, fut cité comme deuxième témoin aux preuves de noblesse de Pierre Louis de Fay, pour être admis dans l'ordre de Malte.
