Familia lombarda muy antigua y muy noble, cuyas numerosas ramas hicieron su hogar y gozaron de nobleza en Venecia, Nápoles, Benevento, Capua, Tropea, Chieti y Nicotera, obteniendo también el título de Gran Duque y la Orden Española del Vellocino de Oro y extendiéndose su poder a las islas jónicas de Zakynthos y Kefalonia. En cualquier caso, la presencia de la familia Tocco en el área de Benevento ya está atestiguada en el siglo XI o en la época del emperador bizantino Alessio I Comneno. El origen de esta cognominación, en nombre de ilustres genealogistas, debe buscarse en el señorío de Tocco, una de sus muchas propiedades.
