Antichissimo ed assai nobile casato longobardo, originariamente conosciuto come Tocco, i cui suoi numerosi rami posero dimora e goderono nobiltà in Venezia, Napoli, Benevento, Capua, Tropea, Chieti e Nicotera, ottenendo anche il titolo di Granduca e l'Ordine spagnolo del Toson d'Oro ed estendendo la loro potestà alle isole ioniche di Zante e Cefalonia. Un ramo del casato prese dimora nel bellunese ed ivi, non sappiamo per quale motivo, iniziò ad esser trascritto come Toccolini. Ascritto a quel patriziato, per meriti civili e militari ed anche per la consueta elargizione di cento mille ducati, continuò per lungo tempo a dimorare in Belluno, benché alcuni suoi membri siano emigrati anche in terre lontane. D'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
