La famiglia di Pistoia è un ramo della illustre e storica famiglia dei conti omonimi di Siena, riconosciuto con due atti solenni (19 gennaio 1622), rogito ser Claudio Bandini in Siena, e 11 ottobre 1709 rogito Giuseppe Maria Torrenti in Siena) e porta uguale lo stemma. Scemata la gran potenza di questa famiglia in Siena, nella seconda metà del secolo XIV, molti di essi espatriarono diramandosi a Roma, Napoli, Macerata, Ferrara e Pistoia. Qui venne Tommeo di Jacomo di Francesco nel 1390 e si stabilì a Piuvica, località distante tre miglia dalla città: egli aveva per moglie Costanza di Ranuccio Saracini, della nobilissima famiglia senese; suo figlio Papero o Passero, sposò Caterina Panciatichi, e Tommeo figlio di Papero o Passero, sposò Marietta Forteguerri. La famiglia Tolomei fu ascritta alla nobiltà pistoiese nel 1576. Il Priorista per la città di Pistoia compilato nel 1635 da Pandolfo Arferuoli e conservato nell'Archivio Capitolare
