Come accade per molte delle più illustri famiglie, anche per i si è voluta dai genealogisti ricercare un'origine favolosa, facendoti discendere dai sovrani d'Egitto, in realtà sembra che la famiglia sia invece venuta in Italia al seguito degli eserciti di Carlo Magno al tempo della conquista del regno longobardo. Fissatisi nel territorio senese, acquistarono presto ingenti ricchezze e furono fra le prime famiglie di banchieri, che appunto in Siena esercitarono l'arte del cambio. Oltre a numerose terre e castelli nel territorio senese, ebbero case e torri in Siena, dove erano ascritti all'Ordine dei Grandi e al Monte del Gentiluomo. Era di loro patronato l'antichissima chiesa di S. Cristoforo, nella quale si radunavano i consoli del nascente Comune senese già dal XII secolo, ed erano signori di Poggio S. Cecilia, Civitella, Campagnatico, Prata, Porrona, S. Giovan D'Asso, Argiano e Castel della Selva. Più tardi ebbero la baronia siciliana di Terra
