Cuenta con el descenso de la familia Leopardi de Constantinopla, que se cree que pasó a Ancona desde 646, cambiando el apellido por el de Tomasi. Parece que el primero en traerla a Sicilia fue un Mario, que había obtenido la ciudadanía y el patriciado del Senado romano con el privilegio de 1569 (privilegio ejecutado en Sicilia el 6 de abril de 1746 a petición de Ferdinando Maria Tomai Caro, príncipe de Lampedusa), quien fue capitán de armas de Licata en 1585 y se casó con Francesca De Caro y Celestre, baronesa de Montechiaro y Lampedusa, baronías que por este matrimonio entraron en la casa. Ferdinando y Caro, su hijo, obtuvieron la investidura de estas baronías el 22 de mayo de 1614, se casaron con Isabella La Restia y Jurato y fueron el padre de Carlo Giulio, quien, con privilegio dado en Madrid el 10 de diciembre de 1638, ejecutó

Fonte: "Nobiliario di Sicilia" di Antonio Mango di Casalgerardo (Palermo, A. Reber, 1912). Note: Si ipotizza un legame con i Tomasi, Tommasi e Tomasi di Lampedusa ma non ci sono prove documentali. Un Antonino Tomasi e Rinaldi il 24 settembre 1797 ottenne l'investitura dello strasatto di Nadore e nel 20 agosto 1809 ottenne l'investitura del feudo Canetici e fu capitano di giustizia in Sciacca nell’anno 1812-13.
