Possui a descendência da família Leopardi de Constantinopla, que se acredita ter passado para Ancona desde 646, mudando o sobrenome para o de Tomasi. Parece que o primeiro a trazê-la para a Sicília foi um Mario, que obteve cidadania e patrocínio do Senado romano com o privilégio de 1569 (privilégio executado na Sicília em 6 de abril de 1746 a pedido de Ferdinando Maria Tomai Caro, príncipe de Lampedusa), que foi capitão de armas de Licata em 1585 e casou-se com Francesca De Caro e Celestre, baronesa de Montechiaro e Lampedusa, baronesa que, por esse casamento, entrou na casa. Ferdinando e Caro, seu filho, obtiveram posse desses barões em 22 de maio de 1614, casaram-se com Isabella La Restia e Jurato e foram pai de Carlo Giulio, que, com privilégio concedido em Madri em 10 de dezembro de 1638, executado em Messina em 26 de abril de 1639, obteve o

Fonte: "Nobiliario di Sicilia" di Antonio Mango di Casalgerardo (Palermo, A. Reber, 1912). Note: Si ipotizza un legame con i Tomasi, Tommasi e Tomasi di Lampedusa ma non ci sono prove documentali. Un Antonino Tomasi e Rinaldi il 24 settembre 1797 ottenne l'investitura dello strasatto di Nadore e nel 20 agosto 1809 ottenne l'investitura del feudo Canetici e fu capitano di giustizia in Sciacca nell’anno 1812-13.
