A very ancient surname, it derives from two noble lineages. The Tommasi family claims to be descended from the Leopardi family of Constantinople, which is said to have moved to Ancona since 646, changing the surname to that of Tomasi. It seems that the first to bring it to Sicily was a Mario, who had obtained citizenship and patriciate status from the Roman Senate with a privilege of 1569 (privilege performed in Sicily on 6 April 1746 at the request of Ferdinando Maria Tomai Caro, prince of Lampedusa), who was captain of arms of Licata in 1585 and married Francesca De Caro and Celestre, baroness of Montechiaro and Lampedusa, baronies that passed into the house through this marriage. Ferdinando and Caro, their son, obtained the investiture of these baronies on May 22, 1614, married Isabella La Restia and Jurato and was the father of Carlo Giulio, who, with a privilege
