Vanta discendere dalla famiglia dei Leopardi di Costantinopoli, che si vuole passata in Ancona sin dal 646, cambiando il cognome in quello di Tomasi. Pare che il primo a portarla in Sicilia sia stato un Mario, che aveva ottenuto dal Senato Romano la cittadinanza ed il patriziato con privilegio del 1569 (privilegio esecutoriato in Sicilia il 6 aprile 1746 a richiesta di Ferdinando Maria Tomai Caro, principe di Lampedusa), che fu capitan d'armi di Licata nel 1585 e sposò Francesca De Caro e Celestre, baronessa di Montechiaro e di Lampedusa, baronie che per tale matrimonio passarono in casa. Ferdinando e Caro, loro figlio, ottenne investitura di dette baronie il 22 maggio 1614, sposò Isabella La Restia e Jurato e fu padre di Carlo Giulio, che, con privilegio dato in Madrid il 10 dicembre 1638, esecutoriato in Messina il 26 aprile 1639, ottenne concessione del titolo di duca di Palma, fu
