Famiglia assai antica e nobile,della quale i più lontani riferimenti, documentati, si trovano in Pisa nel XII secolo. Nel 1187,infatti, la suddetta repubblica marinara, occupò il giudicato di Cagliari, mentre si stava preparando III crociata e, dunque, nel 1188 due Cardinali inviati da papa Clemente III ottennero la pace tra le due città, giurata da 1.000 Genovesi scelti da Pisa e, 1.000 Pisani scelti da Genova. Nei dibattiti parlamentari, uno dei più ferventi oppositori alla pace fu Matteo Bonacci, figlio di Guglielmo, facoltoso mercante pisano e rappresentante dei mercanti della Repubblica di Pisa, figlio, a sua volta, di Bonaccio , che si vuole sia il capostipite di questa famiglia.
