Famiglia originaria da Chambèry e stabilitasi in Livorno nella seconda metà del secolo XVI, Maria Luisa, regina d'Etruria, con suo Diploma 25 giugno 1806 concesse a Francesco la nobiltà per sè e discendenti. Aggiunsero i cognomi Ottieri della Ciaja per l'estinzione di un ramo degli Ottieri innestatosi nei della Ciaja. S.M. Vittorio Emanuele III, con Decreto Regio 2 febbraio e Regie Lettere Patenti 26 maggio 1904, concesse il titolo di conte con successione primogeniale mascolina. A questa famiglia ha appartenuto il titolo di Conte, titolo che solevasi dagli imperatori a coloro che erano al loro fianco. Da questi Conti si sceglieva coloro che venivano destinati a soprintendere agli uffizi del regio palazzo, ed altri erano mandati al governo delle provincie dell'impero ed a gurdare i confini. Erano poi altri conti, estranei ai cennati uffizi, come quelli addetti all'annona, al commercio; ed anche i provveditori dell'esercito si ebbero quel titolo.
