Antica ed assai nobile casato della città di Siena, i cui membri furono dei Nove, sotto il governo dei Trentatré, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Molti sono stati gli illustri personaggi che a tal famiglia appartennero. Tra costoro, ricordiamo: il beato Jacopo, certosino, compagno di S. Caterina; fra Giacomo, conventuale, fra i più illustri del suo Ordine; Attilio, lettore e avvocato e uditore di Rota in Bologna nel 1575; Francesco, commissario generale in Siena. Durante la lotta delle fazioni tre fratelli si rifugiarono in Gubbio, Jesi e Viterbo dando origine in questa città a tre rami della famiglia. Del ramo stabilitosi a Gubbio molti coprirono la carica di gonfaloniere e furono ascritti a quella nobiltà sin dal 1776, con Damiano. Note: Le originarie figure (collari da torneo) sono diventate rose, forse per cattiva esecuzione, a partire almeno dalla seconda metà del XVI secolo. Deriverebbero da una famiglia famiglia Rossi di Gubbio probabilmente estintasi nei Tondi. Si trova anche la forma Tondo.
