Famiglia assai antica ed illustre delle cui origini non vi sono notizie certe, i nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano ricordati in testi, atti notori e contratti di acquisto di terre e case in diverse regioni d'Italia fin da tempi molto antichi. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome, dovute alle solite cause della fonetica storica, della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi. Acquistò all'asta un carato del feudo consortile di Cesena nel 1765 e fu investita con titolo comitale nello stesso anno. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare e conte di Cesena (m.), in persona dell'ultimo riconoscimento Antonio Giovani, di Giovanni (1841). Ascritta nel 1793 al Consiglio nobile di Belluno, era già insignita del titolo di conte conseguito mercè la sua aggregazione al consorzio dei conti giurisdicenti di Cesara avvenuta nel 1765.
