Originaria della Svizzera, la si trova stabilita fin dalla metà del XI secolo nel Trentino, ove fabbricò il castello di Tono, cui dopo la sua rovina fu sostituito il nuovo castello Thun sulla sponda sinistra del Noce nella valle di Non. Albertino, vivente verso il 1050, fu il primo signore di Tono; ma la prima investitura di cui si ha memoria di questa famiglia è del 1199, colla quale un Alberto e un Manfredino di Tono furono insieme ai loro nepoti investiti da Corrado vescovo di Trento del dosso di Visione col permesso di fabbricarvi sopra un castello. Oltre i summenzionati castelli di Tono e di Visione, possedette questa famiglia nel Trentino San Pietro, Castel Broghiero, S. Ippolito, Castel Fondo, Vigna, Cagnò, Mastizzolo, Rumo, Mocenigo, Zoccolo, Brezelario, Altaguarda, Rocca, Caldes e Previana.
