Apellido extremeño, oriundo de Portugal, donde ya existía en el siglo XIII, en cuya época vivía Martín T. Don Gonzalo T. de Sotomayor, caballero noble de la Casa y solar de T. en la Villa de Alcántara, provincia de Cáceres, era legítimo descendiente de Gonzalo Sánchez T., que fue Capitán General de la Mar por el Rey Don Juan II, quien le concedió en premio de sus grande servicios las armas que hoy ostentan sus descendietens. Don Juan de Sotomayor T., II del nombre, nació en la villa de Cáceres y formó la Casa de su apellido en La Palma, donde contrajo matrimonio con la noble señora Doña Ana de Monteverde Estupiñán Socarrás, hija única del señor Juan de Monteverde Pruss, Capitán General de la isla de La Palma. Fue su único hijo Don Pedro de Sotomayor T. y Monteverde, que nació en Sevilla y a los dieciséis años contrajo matrimonio en Santa Cruz de la Palma.
