Antica illustre famiglia di origine longobarda, trasse il nome dal castello di Toppo, di cui era signora da remotissimo tempo. Stabilita la sua sede in Udine, nel 1320 fu aggregata a quella cittadinanza. Un Ursino di Toppo nel 1188 era dapifero di Gotoffredo patriarca di Aquileja. L'incarico di portare in pubblico lo stendardo di Udine era privilegio di questa famiglia, la quale possedè molti feudi, e sostenne le più eminenti cariche dello stato friulano. Come castellana, occupava nel parlamento tra il ceto de' nobili il ventiduesimo posto. Fu confermata nella sua avita nobiltà con sovrana risoluzione 22 Sett. 1820. La famiglia Toppo alzò per arma. Interzato in fascia; nel primo d'azzurro a tre stelle d'argento 2 e 1; nel secondo di rosso a tre corone d'argento, ordinate in fascia; nel terzo d'oro, a tre spade, al naturale, abbassate, una accanto all'altra.
