Antiga família ilustre de origem lombarda, recebeu o nome do castelo de Toppo, do qual ela era uma dama por muito tempo. Estabeleceu sua sede em Udine, em 1320 foi agregada a essa cidadania. Um Ursino de Toppo em 1188 foi dapifero do patriarca de Aquileja, Gotoffredo. A tarefa de levar a bandeira de Udine em público era o privilégio desta família, que possuía muitos feudos, e apoiava os escritórios mais eminentes do estado de Friulian. Como castelana, ocupou o 22º lugar no parlamento entre a classe dos nobres. Foi confirmado em sua nobreza ancestral com a resolução soberana de 22 de setembro de 1820. A família Toppo foi criada como uma arma. Ovas de seis peças em azul e prata.
