Capostipite di questa nobile famiglia, fu un Simone di Tieri di messer Ruggero, il quale nel 1393 prese il cognome di Tornabuoni. Ammessa alle magistrature, diede 15 priori e sei gonfalonieri alla patria dal 1445 al 1530. Partigiana dei Medici, si alleò a questa celebre famiglia per il matrimonio contratto da Lucrezia di Francesco con Pietro figlio di Cosimo il Vecchio. Giovanni, fratello di Lucrezia, fu tesoriere di Papa Sisto IV, ed ambasciatore allo stesso Pontefice nel 1480, poi ad Innocenzo VIII nel 1484. Lorenzo, suo figlio, nel 1497 fu decapitato, ed altri della casa furono mandati in esilio complici in una congiura diretta a rimettere i Medici in Firenze. Giovanni e Leonardo, Vesovo di S. Sepolcro, figli di Lorenzo, parteggiarono pei Medici durante l'assedio di Firenze. Giuliano, figlio di Filippo, altro fratello della sommenzionata Lucrezia, fu Vescovo di Saluzzo, e Simone, suo fratello, fu da Leone X eletto presidente
