Una delle più antiche famiglie d'Italia discendente dai conti già sovrani di Lavagna e che ebbe 95 suoi componenti iscritti al Libro d'Oro di Genova. I conti di Lavagna erano dinasti di secondo ordine della Riviera orientale di Genova. Il loro dominio comprendeva all'incirca il territorio dipendente dalle località di Lavagna, Rovereto, Chiavari, Sestri, Zoagli, Zerli, Varese Ligure, ecc., che ora sono quasi tutte città; ma allora non lo erano; per il che devesi piuttosto usare il termine di "contea" invece che di "comitato" oppure "comitatulus". Il conte del comitato vero e proprio risiede abitualmente in una città, che è sede della sua giurisdizione sempre maggiore che quella di una contea; in quella guisa che il marchese di una Marca è cosa diversa dal marchese di un marchesato.
