Antichissimo ed assai illustre casato spagnolo, detto Torres, Torresi o Torrese, un cui ramo passò in Italia, stabilendosi nel Regno di Napoli, in persona di don Luigi, del Supremo Consiglio dell'Imperatore Carlo V e che fu arcivescovo di Salerno. I nipoti di costui, don Luigi e don Hernando, diventarono l'uno arcivescovo di Monreale, l'altro cavaliere dell'Ordine di S. Giacomo della Spada. Proprio quest'ultimo, inviato dal re Cattolico presso la Corte pontificia, sposò Pantesilea Sanguigni, ultima del proprio casato e si stabilì definitivamente a Roma, ove la sua famiglia venne aggregata a quel patriziato. Tal casato, inoltre, venne ricevuto nell'Ordine di Malta nel 1574 e diede i natali a Ludovico, protettore del Tasso, nominato cardinale nel 1606 da Paolo V, ed a Cosimo, decorato anch'egli della sacra porpora, nel 1622. Francesco, inoltre, già sposo di Luisa Severino, ottenne il titolo di duca sul cognome. La famiglia fu anche insignita del marchesato
