Famiglia assai antica e nobile, originaria di Gubbio. Nel corso dei secoli vari membri di questa illustre casata, si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia, ove furono accolti nelle importanti cariche della città dove ebbero dimora. In Gubbio nel 1163, un Rinaldo era console e capitano. Più tardi un Michele, di Brunamonte della Serra, con il figlio Bernardo, si stabilì a Bologna. Nel 1341 e nel 1347, altri di questa famiglia erano in Bologna, ma il primo di cui si posa parlare con certezza, è Napoleone della Serra, alias della Malvasia, che viveva nel 1380, dal quale discese Francesco, che ebbe due mogli: Rachele Caprara, la prima e Lucrezia Bottrigari, la seconda. Questa famiglia, diventata bolognese, cominciò a farsi notare forse per le sue ricchezze.
